O-YA Leads 2010 - Challenging Rural Teens
Over the August 20th weekend, O-YA had its first leadership camp and it was INCREDIBLE. Designed by Matt Gumley, and facilitated by 4 Youth Workers 'O-YA Leads' encouraged 12 of our rural youth to lead, trust, mediate, organize their time and most importantly to challenge themselves. The first day took place at O-YA, and Doug Thompson was a guest speaker. Days 2 through 4 were at the Tesswood cottage on Green Lake, Que. The participants set up camp, swam, canoed, dunked their heads in a waterfall and tested their resolve with the most amazing Scavenger hunt I have ever seen.
The smiles were abundant, the laughter echoed off the Gatineau Hills and the rain and grey skies did not deter their enthusiasm for even a brief moment. There was singing around the campfire, a session with an Ottawa Police Detective and an enormous amount of food!
My thanks to Elliot Blaney, Matt Gumley, Tara Woodley, Gavin Nickerson and Sam McCaffrey-Roots who volunteered a portion of their time to be a part of this memorable program. Special thanks to Chris Tessier for being such an inspired host, and to Mary and Gary Blaney for lending us their van to help get the youth to the cottage.
Councilor Doug Thompson was so supportive of this program that he donated $500 towards O-YA Leads. Our thanks to his office for this generous donation.
Looking forward to O-YA Leads 2011!
To our incredible youth...Shine on!
