Teens complain that parents nag, lecture and attempt to control their lives. Parents complain that teens do not listen and/or change annoying behaviours. Is it possible we talk too much and listen too little in our family relationships? As parents, we all wish to create a safe, strong and positive relationship with teens. In order to accomplish this we must offer messaes that demonstrate respect and a willingness to listen and negotiate. This presentation will present strategies which can influence rather than control teenagers.

Cathy Lumsden, psychotherapist, researcher, international speaker has 25 years plus of experience touching over 100,000 individual adults, families, teenagers and children’s lives. In the fall 2012, Cathy is hosting a TV show on Rogers called The Best Advice Your Mother Never Gave You. She has been an Associate with the Adlerian Counselling and Consulting Group since 1993. Prior to opening her practice in psychology, Cathy worked at the Ottawa-Carleton School Board and the Royal Ottawa Hospital. Cathy was the Director of Training at the Mind/Body Connection in Philadelphia for several years where she also presented internationally. During her three years in Philadelphia she hosted a Parenting Show on the local TV network.

Recently, Cathy has launched a new book called The Best Advice Your Mother Never Gave You: A Guide to Finding Love in the 21st Century. She has also created two guided mediation audios based on brainwave therapy – ‘Deep Relaxation’ and ‘Tapping Into Your Inner Wisdom’. She has blended the science of the brain with the psychology of the mind and body, creating products with immediate and long-term benefits.
